How You Can Help

What individuals can do to help

Do not hunt, eat or buy/sell Pawi, Pawi meat or products

This is important for two reasons:

  1. Being in the possession of a Pawi or Pawi products (meat, feathers, eggs…) is illegal as this bird is Critically Endangered and listed locally by the Environmental Management Authority as an environmentally Sensitive Species. Removing even one Pawi from the wild can result in fewer Pawi chicks each season, reducing the population to a dangerous level. Remember, Pawi are only found here in Trinidad and nowhere else on the planet.
  2. People sometimes think that if an animal is already killed it is okay to buy or eat it, but doing this lets the hunter or seller know that there is a market for the species and he will continue to hunt, kill and sell it. Do not contribute to the killing of Pawi, even indirectly: do not buy, sell or consume any Pawi products.

Be extremely careful when dealing with fire in the forest

Lighting any fire in the forest is dangerous as it can easily get out of control if you are not careful (especially in the dry season). When lighting campfires be careful to clear an area around them and never leave them unattended. Ensure that they are completely out when you leave.

If viewing Pawi try to ensure that you do not bother the bird by your presence

Try to observe Pawi from a distance (using binoculars) when possible. If you believe you are affecting the bird be quieter and move back, giving the bird more space. Do not try to interact with the bird or to touch or feed it.
